CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND
INTERPRETATION
This chapter is divided into two parts. Part I compacts
of presentation of agricultural export data from 2010-2011 collected and
consolidated to come up with an analysis and interpretation of General Santos
City’s Agricultural Export Trend. While Part II deals with the level of
performance of the selected agricultural goods.
PART I. Agricultural Exports for
2010-2011
To sort all of the
exported commodities at the Port of Dadiangas, top ten (10) agricultural goods
are consolidated to show the trends from these years (2010-2011).

In 2010, agricultural goods were the
most consistent in terms of trade. The performance of these commodities changes
every month but remains consistent due to its demands. As what shown in fig 1, processed
goods noted a huge amount of revenue due to its very competitive market
compared to some raw goods which is lesser in value. This may attribute to the multinational
factories which producing more processed goods than to those local producers
who is in line with producing raw goods. The performance of these agricultural
goods (processed and raw) will drive local producers and multinational
factories to increase the quantity of their production especially in their
exports.
The 4th quarter of 2010 is
more stable compared to the other quarters because most of the agricultural
commodities exported have seasonal characteristics this is due to the parallel
effect of the seasonal goods such as frozen milkfish and smoke fish, as the
season changes the value of exported agricultural goods also changes. During the
first month of the year, frozen milkfish and smoke fish does not have its
export activity because there is no demand from this kind of goods. While
canned tuna and canned pineapple establish a good start with a total of $15,372,134.72
and $9,212,903.33 respectively.
Tuna and pineapple
products dominate the export. This suggests that General Santos City’s
exporters are subject to maximization inherent to the other agricultural goods which
in turn increase the export revenue of the city.
In 2011, tuna products continue to lead
the whole exports. The performance of these goods varies according to its
demand but increases due to very competitive markets. During the first quarter,
agricultural goods both processed and raw has stable values but relatively, the
remaining quarters turn to change as the market changes due to growing
competition in the world market. Compared in 2010, the performance of the
agricultural goods continues to develop.
In the graphical presentation of 2011,
it implies that as the economy rises year by year the demand of these
agricultural goods (crops, livestock, etc.,) increases parallel to its changes
even if some of this goods have seasonal characteristics that even if it will
lead to its lowest performance but throughout the whole year, it remains in the
top performing agricultural commodities. In 2010, smoke fish noted to have its
slow start as well in 2011 resulting to one of the least performing
agricultural exports.
As stated earlier, the export
performance of 2011 is much higher than in 2010. It implies that there will be
a persistent increase for the succeeding years to come.

By the year 2010,it shows that most of
the commodities fall on the low performing category. The products that belong to
this category are those seasonal products namely: frozen milkfish, smoke fish,
dried fruits, fresh tuna, fresh pineapple, frozen whole tuna, frozen tuna and
pouched tuna. However, pouched tuna sometimes fall on the average level performing
goods when it is in its season.
From the month of January-December 2010,
canned tuna remains to be on the level of high performing category due to the
numerous canning factories located within the GenSan’s vicinity driving the
city’s title as the “tuna capital of the Philippines”. The performance of canned
pineapple vary within the level of high and average performing goods but never
it was lead to the low performing category.

In 2011, there has been a result of
great changes in the level of performance of the top ten agricultural products.
Some of the seasonal products remains to be in the level of low performing
category except for the frozen tuna, fresh pineapple, frozen whole tuna, and
pouched tuna from which at some point of time (May, June and December) those
products are now in the average level performing category.
Throughout the year, frozen milkfish was
always observed to be in the low level of performance category except for the
month of February from which it suddenly reaches its highest exported value
that makes it place to the highest category level of performance.
Canned tuna and canned pineapple
fluctuates from high to average and from average to high level of performance.
However, the fluctuation of canned tuna may attribute to the banning of
Filipino fishermen across the nautical boundary of the Philippines but due to
its competitive demand, tuna products regains its position as one of the
highest performing agricultural goods of the city.
